Security door and gate prices vary widely because almost every one is built to the opening. This page gives rough 2026 rand ranges for the usual sizes and types, supplied and fitted, and explains what moves a quote up or down. Use the figures to judge whether a quote is reasonable, then send us your sizes and area. Manufacturers and installers near you will quote directly, and you can compare them side by side.
Typical prices by item
These are rough guides for powder-coated mild steel, supplied and fitted, in a standard town or city:
- Single hinged security door, 813 to 900 x 2,032 to 2,100 mm: R3,500 to R8,500
- Door with solid kick panel and mesh: R4,800 to R10,500
- Trellis door, about 900 x 2,100 mm: R3,000 to R7,000
- Double security door, about 1,600 x 2,100 mm: R7,500 to R16,000
- Sliding door security gate, 1,800 to 3,000 mm wide: R5,500 to R14,000
- Expanding gate for a patio, about 2,000 x 2,100 mm: R4,500 to R9,500
The lower end is plain bars, the upper end heavier steel, solid panels and a better lock. Heavy double gates for yards and stores are priced on steel weight and are quoted separately.
Prices include VAT and fitting in a main centre. A job outside town, or one that needs scaffolding or a bakkie full of anchors for a high wall, can add R300 to R1,200 for travel and access.
What drives the price
Four things matter most. First, size: a wide opening needs more steel and stronger frames. Second, steel thickness: 16 mm bars on 25 x 25 mm tube cost more than lighter sections. Third, finish: galvanising under the powder coat adds roughly 10 to 20 percent but is worth it near the sea. Fourth, lock and fittings: a basic lock is cheap, a multi-point set is not. See security door locks for options.
Work on site adds to the total: removing an old gate, fixing into a crooked frame, making good plaster and travel to a remote area.
Shop-bought or made to measure
Large hardware chains such as Cashbuild, Builders or Makro stock ready-made gates in common sizes. They suit standard openings and a tight budget, and you fit them yourself or pay a handyman. A made-to-measure door costs more, but it fills your exact opening, can be built heavier and is usually fitted with proper anchors. If your opening is non-standard, an off-the-shelf gate often needs cutting and adjusting, which cancels the saving.
Comparing quotes fairly
Ask each supplier to quote the same specification: steel sizes, finish, lock, fixing method, guarantee and lead time. A low price that leaves out installation or the lock is not a saving. Quotes are usually valid for 14 to 30 days because steel prices move, and a deposit of about half is normal for made-to-measure work. Look for the number of anchor bolts, whether welds are continuous and whether the quote includes making good. For a complete job, read security door installation, and for a general overview see security doors.
What to include in your request
- Width and height of each opening in mm
- Door or gate type: hinged, trellis, sliding or expanding
- Steel finish and whether you are near the sea
- Whether installation and removal of old gates is needed
- Budget range, so suppliers can offer a fitting option
Security Door Prices for different properties
- Houses: a single steel door at the front and a lighter trellis door at the back
- Townhouses and complexes: a patio sliding gate and a front door in the complex colour, priced per opening
- Flats and apartments: one entrance gate at the lower end of the price range
- Farms and smallholdings: heavy doors for houses and stores, with travel and galvanising adding to the total
- Shops and restaurants: a folding shopfront gate and a steel back door, priced by width
- Offices and practices: neat doors at reception and a stronger door for the server room
- Factories and warehouses: double steel doors and heavy gates priced on steel weight
- Schools, clinics and churches: bulk door orders priced on a specification, often through a tender
